Water Absorbing Coasters

Posted By:  Stephanie

I have been wanting water absorbing coasters for awhile now but haven't wanted to spend the money for them.  I have seen the water absorbing coasters for $5-$6 EACH, which I'm just not willing to spend.  This project cost a total of $9.27 which comes out to $1.03 each.  This was full price, I didn't have a coupon so you could probably do better than I did.

I bought 4" X 4" Travertine Tiles from Home Depot as well as sticky felt rounds (I'm not sure the proper name for these) for the bottom of the tiles so that once they were my coasters they wouldn't scratch up the furniture.  The tiles came in a pack of 9 which gives me more than plenty to work with around the house.

The tiles were a bit dusty so I wet a paper towel and wiped them down.

These are the felt sticky rounds that I got.  Once they are stuck on, they aren't going anywhere!

All you have to do is take the back paper off and stick them on the corners.

One down, eight more to go.

I'm seeing some progress...

Here they are finished and ready to be used!

The coasters don't absorb the water immediately, but when the water pools on it and sits for a little while the water does eventually absorb into the tile, unlike with other non absorbing coasters.

I want to play with the top, maybe try putting our initial H on them.  If I do that I'll be sure to get back with a tutorial how I do it.

Side note: We are linking up here this week.

  1. I like the rustic look of those tiles - I'll have to remember that when I go to HD next! You could stamp the top with an ink called "stayz on" - it doesn't come off when it gets wet. :)

  2. Thank you for the suggestion! I hadn't researched what to use yet, do you know where I can get that ink?

  3. Stayz-On is available at Michaels, Joann's and I think maybe at Hobby Lobby. It's available in ink-pads and in pens also. Comes in many colors, including metallic colors. Be sure to test it on one tile, and give it plenty of time to dry.
