I WILL Stay in the Picture

Posted By:  Stephanie

I came across this article today when a couple of people posted it on Facebook from the Huffington Post.  I'm so glad I read it, this is exactly what I needed because I can relate so much.  It will just take a moment to read, you'll be glad you did.

The Mom Stays in the Picture
By Allison Tate

Last weekend, my family traveled to attend my oldest niece's Sweet Sixteen party. My brother and sister-in-law planned this party for many months and intended it to be a big surprise, and it included a photo booth for the guests.
I showed up to the party a bit late and, as usual, slightly askew from trying to dress myself and all my little people for such a special night out. I'm still carrying a fair amount of baby weight and wearing a nursing bra, and I don't fit into my cute clothes. I felt awkward and tired and rumpled.
I was leaning my aching back against the bar, my now 5-month-old baby sleeping in a carrier on my chest (despite the pounding bass and dulcet tones of LMFAO blasting through the room) when my 5-year-old son ran up to me.
"Come take pictures with me, Mommy," he yelled over the music, "in the photo booth!"
I hesitated. I avoid photographic evidence of my existence these days. To be honest, I avoid even mirrors. When I see myself in pictures, it makes me wince. I know I am far from alone; I know that many of my friends also avoid the camera.
It seems logical. We're sporting mama bodies and we're not as young as we used to be. We don't always have time to blow dry our hair, apply make-up, perhaps even bathe (ducking). The kids are so much cuter than we are; better to just take their pictures, we think.
But we really need to make an effort to get in the picture. Our sons need to see how young and beautiful and human their mamas were. Our daughters need to see us vulnerable and open and just being ourselves -- women, mamas, people living lives. Avoiding the camera because we don't like to see our own pictures? How can that be okay?
Too much of a mama's life goes undocumented and unseen. People, including my children, don't see the way I make sure my kids' favorite stuffed animals are on their beds at night. They don't know how I walk the grocery store aisles looking for treats that will thrill them for a special day. They don't know that I saved their side-snap, paper-thin baby shirts from the hospital where they were born or their little hospital bracelets in keepsake boxes high on the top shelves of their closets. They don't see me tossing and turning in bed wondering if I am doing an okay job as a mother, if they are okay in their schools, where we should take them for a vacation, what we should do for their birthdays. I'm up long past the news on Christmas Eve wrapping presents and eating cookies and milk, and I spend hours hunting the Internet and the local Targets for specially-requested Halloween costumes and birthday presents. They don't see any of that.
Someday, I want them to see me, documented, sitting right there beside them: me, the woman who gave birth to them, whom they can thank for their ample thighs and their pretty hair; me, the woman who nursed them all for the first years of their lives, enduring porn star-sized boobs and leaking through her shirts for months on end; me, who ran around gathering snacks to be the week's parent reader or planning the class Valentine's Day party; me, who cried when I dropped them off at preschool, breathed in the smell of their post-bath hair when I read them bedtime stories, and defied speeding laws when I had to rush them to the pediatric ER in the middle of the night for fill-in-the-blank (ear infections, croup, rotavirus).
I'm everywhere in their young lives, and yet I have very few pictures of me with them. Someday I won't be here -- and I don't know if that someday is tomorrow or thirty or forty or fifty years from now -- but I want them to have pictures of me. I want them to see the way I looked at them, see how much I loved them. I am not perfect to look at and I am not perfect to love, but I am perfectly their mother.
When I look at pictures of my own mother, I don't look at cellulite or hair debacles. I just see her -- her kind eyes, her open-mouthed, joyful smile, her familiar clothes. That's the mother I remember. My mother's body is the vessel that carries all the memories of my childhood. I always loved that her stomach was soft, her skin freckled, her fingers long. I didn't care that she didn't look like a model. She was my mama.
So when all is said and done, if I can't do it for myself, I want to do it for my kids. I want to be in the picture, to give them that visual memory of me. I want them to see how much I am here, how my body looks wrapped around them in a hug, how loved they are.
I will save the little printed page with four squares of pictures on it and the words "Morgan's Sweet Sixteen" scrawled across the top with the date. There I am, hair not quite coiffed, make-up minimal, face fuller than I would like -- one hand holding a sleeping baby's head, and the other wrapped around my sweet littlest guy, who could not care less what I look like.

________________________________________________________________

All I could think of was how much I wish I were in more pictures now.  I was able to scrounge up a few and decided to share them, to keep me accountable and as my first attempt to "be in the picture".  From now on and not going to let myself feel ashamed about what I look like in the picture because my sweet girls don't care and wont care when they're older.  They will just be happy to see me with them.  Here are some pictures at weights I'm not proud of, hair not done, no make-up on, post baby acne and all.  These are REAL pictures, pictures of me adoring my children.  In this moment I couldn't be more proud of these pictures because moments were captured that I want my girls to be able to hang onto and share for years to come.

Welcome to the World Lelo!

Posted By:  Stephanie

Hello everyone!  One month ago today 8/18/12 we welcomed our second daughter, Lelo (her nickname, pronounced Lee-Low), into the world.  Although it is a little strange to wrap my head around being a family of 4, I couldn't be happier and she fits into our family perfectly.  We are all SO in love!

Our first family photo!
This moment watching Lou with her little sister for the first time was precious.

Our birth story:

For as long as I can remember, my dream situation for going into labor was for my water to break at Walmart.  Why Walmart of all places?  I don’t really know, it just came in my mind one day and I couldn’t shake it.  Lucky for me we live in a small town that only has two options for grocery, Safeway and Walmart so odds were getting a little higher for me of this happening as long as I was shopping.  When we had Lou I was induced so going into labor on my own was going to be a new experience, if it even happened at all.

It was the evening of 4/18 which also happened to be Lelo’s due date and we (Will, Lou and I) decided to venture out of the house to go pet some animals at the feed store, get some treats from Starbucks then head to Walmart for some groceries.  After looking down just about every aisle of the store we finally got started with the grocery shopping.  Right as we walk down the first grocery aisle I had a contraction which I didn’t think anything of because I had been having them randomly for about 2 days.  I took another step and GUSH my water broke all over the place!  We quickly left but not before informing the gal who worked there they needed a “clean up” on that aisle, which was part of my grand plan.

It was about 6:15pm when we left the parking lot to head to the hospital.  Living an hour away from the hospital Will thought it was a good idea to go straight there even though I wasn't having regular contractions and I wanted to go home and clean up.  Just for a little perspective here, our home is about 10 miles from the store (about 12-15 minutes).  After a few short minutes in the car on the way to the hospital my contractions were close together and very painful, I knew I was in full labor.  Needless to say, I was grateful for Will insisting we go straight there!

Will drove to the hospital and got there in record time because he was going between 80-85 mph the entire way there.  Once we arrived there was no time for parking, Lelo was ready to come so Will stopped in the turnaround afraid that she may just come out while walking to the hospital once we found a place to park.  By the time we got in the building and in the room I was on all 4s knowing that she was ready to come, like THEN!  I informed them that I needed to get an epidural and quick because with Lou my tailbone broke during labor and I didn't want to feel that happen again knowing that it was a huge possibility.  Knowing my history with that they didn't refuse me and tried to get it working but they used the medication that I had informed them my body doesn't respond to, so guess who didn't get a working epidural until AFTER birth?  That’s right, me.  Oh well, she came out with 2 pushes and a total of 5 minutes at 8:43pm after holding her in not wanting to push until the epidural was working.

Lelo was 9lbs 3oz, 21 inches long and healthy as can be!  Lou was 9lbs 6oz and 20 ½ inches long when she was born, they are so similar. In case you were wondering no, my tailbone didn't break this time THANK GOODNESS!

I love this squishy face.

Such a proud big sister!

Bubba (Kristi), Lelo and I

Still at the hospital.  I can't resist kissing these cheeks!

This was just after birth.
While they were getting me all cleaned/stitched up
Will had skin to skin time with Lelo.
Such a special moment.

For me pregnancy is such a special thing, I love being pregnant.  I also experience horrible sickness throughout the entire pregnancy which makes it hard to do every day things a lot of the time.  Although I would always push through and continue my daily life as normal as I could it wasn't always easy.  Even though I love being pregnant I also love that I now have a sweet baby in my arms and that I haven't felt sick, not for one moment since she was born.  I'm really looking forward to doing more of the things I love again like crafts and projects with Lou, trying new recipes, possibly painting a few walls, blogging and other things that when I would try and do them while pregnant it would result in a trip to the bathroom to hug the toilet.  TMI?  I hope not.

It's A ......

We are so excited to announce that we are having a GIRL!!!  Although we would have been happy either way I'm really looking forward to Little Lou having a sister to grow up with just like I did (I was lucky to have 2 sisters).

Because of not wanting to disclose her real name to the entire net, although if I knew it was just you awesome trusty readers I would post our kids name in a flash, we're blurring out the name that we announced to our family on ultrasound day.  Kristi had the awesome idea of writing Hi my name is ______ on a shirt so once everyone arrived I was able to go up the stairs and show everyone at once.

Her nickname is Lelo (pronounced Lee-Low)

I'm so lucky to have an awesome sister/kids auntie/god mother to our girls who would throw us a party on the night we had our ultrasound.  She made a super yummy dinner (posted previously), and even decorated with a super cute colorful banner just for fun.  Thank you so much Bubba, we love you!

Our sweet baby is scheduled to arrive some time around August 18th.  We are all looking forward to meeting our new addition.  Life is so great!

My Sister is AMAZING!

Posted By:  Stephanie

Happy Tuesday everyone!  I hope everyone is doing well and enjoying their winter.  Spring is just around the corner, personally I can't wait!

I want to first tell you all how amazing my sister is.  She has been such a champ posting without me while I make great attempts at getting through each day.  I have been so, so sick and although I still am it's getting MUCH better.  I appreciate her love and support so much, she hasn't complained even once!

Here I am, sitting on the bathroom floor with the computer on the toilet typing this while Little Lou gets a bath.  She is not only getting a bath but a full on soak while she "swims" because she is covered COATED in ravioli!  This was the first time I had given it to her and she loved it.  After she was done I immediately undressed her, threw her clothes in the wash and her in the tub.

I just thought I would share this random picture you haven't seen of her.  She is eating cheese, one of her most favorite things to eat.  This was on the day of Samantha's snowball.  Lou just saw this picture while peering from the side of the tub, she was yelling "Baby!"  I had to tell her it was her, she liked that.  = )

A Few Updates:

  • I made a comment to a friend that Lou hadn't been sick since she left daycare back in May.  The next day she got a horrible cold, soon after she got the flu and was vomiting, then she got a bad fever that turned into a virus that comes in the form of spots all over her body.  Note to self:  Keep thoughts of this kind to myself, or at least remember to knock on wood.  Poor girl.

  • Little Lou has a new obsession with brushing her teeth.  She prefers to brush them upwards of 3-4 times a day, so we do.

  • I am now 12 weeks 3 days pregnant, loosing weight and gaining a belly.  There's a baby in there folks!  We go back the the doctor on Thursday which we're looking forward to because we will be seeing our midwife this time.  We can't wait to hear our baby's heart beat.

  • Lou likes to put my bra on her arms these last new days and go around the house saying "Boobs".  It is funny, but I think we'll keep that in the house.

  • This sweet girl of ours has a new thing for hats.  She likes to be like daddy and will put a hat on and walk around the house.  We were getting ready to leave the house yesterday, we were at the door then she quickly turned around went and got the hat, put it on and walked back saying "Ready".  Seriously, so adorable!  I love that she is getting older and having opinions about what she likes.

I'm sure there are a million other things going on, but I thought I would only focus on a few for now.  Talk to you all REAL soon!

We're Expecting!

Posted By:  Stephanie

(The baby looks like a wrapped up piece of candy because the doctor printed the picture in the smallest mode where she was doing the measurements.  That is what the little V looking things at the end are for.)

Surprise!  As you can see from above, Will and I are expecting baby # 2!  Our baby is due in August around the 18th which makes me just over 9 weeks pregnant.  We are SO excited and can't wait for Little Lou to have a friend to play with as they get older.

Kristi mentioned I've been busy with other things.  This is true, THROWING UP!  I've been extremely sick but I'm hoping that will die down soon.  When I was pregnant with Lou I was sick through the entire pregnancy but I'm hoping that wont be the case this time.  I did ask the doctor why it is that I have been more sick in the beginning this time then I was with Lou and I was told that if you're sick while pregnant a lot of times it gets worse with each pregnancy.  Uh oh!  Lets hope that isn't the case, we might want another one some day!

Anyway, I'm trying to dig myself out of my sickness hole I've been living in and hope to bring you all kinds of fun updates through the pregnancy as well as other projects, recipes, Toddler Tuesdays and more.

I hope you are all doing well and you're staying warm.  (It's snowing at my house right now, yippee!!!)

Toddler Tuesday - Keep the Balloon off the Ground and Mommy Moment

Posted By:  Stephanie

Hello and happy Tuesday!

I'm sure many of you have played this game some time in your life but this is also a great game to play with your toddler!  You can use one balloon or tie a few balloons together and play the same way.  Basically the only real rule is to keep the balloon from touching the ground.  This is a great game to play inside on cold days because the balloon wont hurt a thing and it will keep them busy while getting energy out at the same time.  I personally think this mindless game is super fun!

*PLEASE NOTE - Deflated balloons are a serious choking hazard that can cause permanent damage to any living thing that can swallow.*

Have you played this game with your toddler?

Mommy Moment:

Yesterday while Lou was taking a bath she got up onto her knees and started pushing.  Once she sat down a log floated to the top of the water.  I grabbed it out with my bare hand and asked her "Did you do this?"  She responded "Neow" (her word for no) Me "Hmm, I think you did."  I put the poo in the toilet, washed my hands and got her out of the bath.

Thoughts on this:

I NEVER thought that I would willingly pick up poo and not even get grossed out about it.  I mean, there is NO way I would have done that in the past and I can't say I would do that for another child either.  I guess you know you are a mom when you do what you gotta do, even when that means picking up poo with your bare hand without thinking twice.

Have you had a similar poo experience?

Moments Like This...

Early this morning when My Girl woke up for the third time fighting her cold I knew she wasn't going to go back to sleep, she was going to need some mommy love.

I shuffled my feet on the floor with my eyes half open in my attempt to make it to a light without tripping over her toys.  I made it to her room, scooped her up out of her crib and headed to the living room couch where I had planned to cuddle her, hoping she would fall asleep in my arms.

We got settled on the couch, her head on my chest, we were tummy to tummy.  I lay there thinking that I was so tired yet I didn't feel annoyed or bothered, I chose to feel lucky.  I chose to take the rare moment to cuddle her, smelling her hair as she laid so still and silent while twirling my hair in her sweet little fingers.

As the minutes passed I thought about the days the first two months of her life when we spent our time on the couch together each night.  The walking, walking and more walking that we did to settle her as she cried.  I thought about how much she's grown and how I'm so lucky to be her mom.

I continue to lay there thinking about the joy she brings me when I hear her quietly mutter my name, "Momma, Momma" I rub her back to let her know I hear, I don't respond in fear that I would wake her more if I did.  That's when the best moment happened.  The moment where I completely melted and I was reminded once again why being a mommy is the best thing about my life.  My Girl looked up and me, took her nigh-night out of her mouth and smacked her lips at me twice looking for a kiss.  I gave her a kiss and she layed her head back down.

Moments like this make me excited for the next day to come to see what's next in my journey as a mom.  Moments like this are what a mommy lives for, what gives us strength through the harder days.  Moments like this can not fully be explained, they are just felt.

I love you my sweet girl, thank you for moments like this.

During our first two months together.
