Toddler Tuesday - Keep the Balloon off the Ground and Mommy Moment

Posted By:  Stephanie

Hello and happy Tuesday!

I'm sure many of you have played this game some time in your life but this is also a great game to play with your toddler!  You can use one balloon or tie a few balloons together and play the same way.  Basically the only real rule is to keep the balloon from touching the ground.  This is a great game to play inside on cold days because the balloon wont hurt a thing and it will keep them busy while getting energy out at the same time.  I personally think this mindless game is super fun!

*PLEASE NOTE - Deflated balloons are a serious choking hazard that can cause permanent damage to any living thing that can swallow.*

Have you played this game with your toddler?

Mommy Moment:

Yesterday while Lou was taking a bath she got up onto her knees and started pushing.  Once she sat down a log floated to the top of the water.  I grabbed it out with my bare hand and asked her "Did you do this?"  She responded "Neow" (her word for no) Me "Hmm, I think you did."  I put the poo in the toilet, washed my hands and got her out of the bath.

Thoughts on this:

I NEVER thought that I would willingly pick up poo and not even get grossed out about it.  I mean, there is NO way I would have done that in the past and I can't say I would do that for another child either.  I guess you know you are a mom when you do what you gotta do, even when that means picking up poo with your bare hand without thinking twice.

Have you had a similar poo experience?

Toddler Tuesday - Build a Fort

Posted By:  Stephanie

Good morning!  I normally would have already posted by now but I couldn't sign on last night and then today we have been loosing our electricity on and off all morning which has made it very hard to get on the Internet.  Oh well, HERE I AM!

Today is Toddler Tuesday and I have an activity that is fun for both kids and adults, or at least Will and I think it is fun.  Some of you have mentioned that you live in nice sunny states where you don't have rain often (not the case here) but when you do get rain you aren't sure what activities to do with your kids.  Here is a great idea for you...make a fort!

I was selling my fabric gift bags at a bazaar this last weekend and when I came home I found that Will and Little Lou had made this fort.  I know, you can hardly see it with the camo blanket on top. ; )

They made this one with a bunch of chairs and then they put pillows inside so they could get comfy and read books in the fort.  As you can see it was hard to take pictures of Lou, she was all over the place LOVING IT!

Will wanted me to make sure I mentioned that if you make a fort under a table you should put chairs together in front of it to make a hallway kind of thing with a blanket over it as an entry to the fort.  He says that is was his favorite when he was little because he would pretend he was in an igloo.  I just love that guy.

Kristi and I used to make forts too, there's just something fun about getting into your own little space you built.

Did you make forts when you were little?  What was your favorite kind?  Under a table, chairs, something else?  Please share your ideas and the memories you have from when you were little, or what you've done with your kids.

PS Yes, we have already decorated for Christmas, I'll be sharing about that another day.

Toddler Tuesday - Baking

Posted By:  Stephanie

Baking is a great activity to do with your toddler.  Although you can't see from the picture below she was helping me by holding the mixer, she liked how fast it was moving.  Not only is this a fun activity but your child is learning at the same time.

If you have a toddler/child that likes to get involved even more, you can have them help measure what needs to go into what you are baking and dump all the ingredients into the bowl.

We made both cupcakes and a small cake.  She was offered a try of our finished product but didn't want any.  Works for me, I would rather her not eat sweets but there's no way I would have her help me then not offer at least a bite.
= )

(Maybe some day I'll be good at frosting.
This was my first time so I'm going to let me skills slide a bit.
I hope you will too.)

Now for the recipe tip I found on Babblings and More.

When baking a cake or cupcakes from a box substitute mayonnaise for the oil, add a tsp of baking powder and 1-2 tsp of vanilla extract, the more the better!  We made lemon so we used 1 tsp lemon extract and 1 tsp vanilla extract.  Make sure you take it out of the oven when it is still a little spongy.  This makes for some super moist and yummy cupcakes and cakes!

Do you have a trick for making especially good boxed cupcakes/cakes?

Toddler Tuesday - Playing in Water

Posted By:  Stephanie

Happy Tuesday!  I hope your week has started off as a good one.  Can you believe we are SO close to the holidays?  I can't, this year went all to fast.

Yesterday I decided to take an idea that I found on Every Day Game Plan and put it into action with my girl.

First I got the largest bowl we have and put warm water in it with some dish soap.  I made it bubbly and then gave Little Lou her favorite kitchen items to play in the water.

Here she is checking out the bubbles.

She wasn't really sure about the bubbles so I tried to show her they weren't so bad by playing in the bubbles first.

That didn't work out so well.  Her favorite kitchen items ended up out of the bowl because...

she thought the bubbles were NOT COOL!

So I dumped out the bubbles and gave her some fresh water to work with.  She went for it.  At one point she was even trying to put her face in the bowl and rub water all over her face, silly girl.  Let me show you how much she enjoyed this activity...

THIS MUCH!

I don't know about most kids, but I really thought she would enjoy playing in the bubbles.  Oh well, she loved this activity anyway without them.  After playing in the water for a long time, I needed to get other things done but she didn't agree with being "all done", so I dumped out the water, dried the bowl and turned it over to let her bang on it and make noise instead.  She was okay with that.

Now go get a bowl out momma, your little one(s) wants to play in the water!

What other ideas do you have for water activities?

Toddler Tuesday - Dress Up

Posted By:  Stephanie

Good morning!  Did you all survive the night with the trick or treating/treaters visiting your home?  We had a good time visiting family and Lou got some fun treats from Gramma and Auntie, lucky girl!  I was trying to get her to say "treat" on the way to see Gramma, instead she looked out the car window and started saying and pointing to the trees.  She cracks me up all. the. time!

Little Lou was a Ballerina, I was Will (this is what we call his uniform, the hat and the red shirt are his go to pieces) and he was a Navy guy.

Little Lou loved her costume, she walked around the house saying "Pretty"!  This got me thinking, about Toddler Tuesday.  Most times we put away the costumes to use the next year for another kid, instead why not keep it out and let them play dress up until the costume doesn't fit anymore?  It makes the kiddos happy and you will get much more use out of it.

If you haven't already, you should start a dress up box for your little one.  Our girl is just getting to the point where she is thinking it is fun to wear certain clothing items so we will get her collection started.  Dress up is fun for both boys and girls.

I remember going over to a friends house when I was little and they had a huge chest FULL of dress up clothes.  All 5 kids in that family would dress up all the time and when I went to their house I was happy to get in on the fun.  My favorite dress up item at our house was my flapper dress.  I loved putting that thing on a shaking around the house watching the tassels flap around.

Did you play dress up when you were little?  What was your favorite thing to dress up in?

Back to the Binder Clip Photo Holders:

I love when I get a few minutes to put a quick craft together.  On this rare day (yesterday) Little Lou took about a 45 minute nap which she is doing less of lately so I was able to get to work in my craft room and make binder clip photo holders.  Fun thing about this is that if you have a need for a cute binder clip you can always take the photos out and use them to hold your papers with style.

How I made my binder clip photo holders:

First I measured the clip.

I happened to have three large clips to work with.  I would have loved to have jumbo clips but this is what was at our Dollar Tree, so I went with it.  Once I measured the size of the clip where I wanted the paper I cut two pieces for each clip, one for each side.

Next I got out the handy, dandy Mod Podge and a small paint brush.

*Side note - Once I finished this project I cleaned everything up and the paint brush is missing.  Like NOWHERE to be seen which is weird because my craft room is very clean and organized.  I don't get it.*

Paint a layer of Mod Podge onto the clip to use as adhesive for the paper.

Place the paper on the clip.  I followed the same steps and put the paper on both sides before continuing.

Paint a layer of Mod Podge on the top of the paper on both sides to seal it.

Here are my three clips once I finished all of them.  I let them dry for a few minutes before I put them to use.

See the picture on the right side?  That is Kristi (left) and I (right) when she was 7 and I was 5.  I just love this picture because we're wearing the bows our mom used to make us.  Memories, memories.

Speaking of memories, every time I think of Halloween after the year our little sister Samantha was a witch I always think of her in this costume that our mom made.  She was the CUTEST friendly witch of all time.  I wish my mom still had this costume so that Little Lou could wear it next year, I'll have to ask her but I think it's long gone.

I loved having pictures in my craft room while I was testing out my new photo holders so I decided to keep them in there for now along with Lou's canvas painting that she made featured in this weeks Toddler Tuesday.  I'll have to give it up when her big girl room is done but she may have to make me a replacement.

I am guest posting today over at Nap Time Is My Time, you should go over there and check out Emily's blog, she has a lot of great posts and some fun linky parties too.

Have a great day!

Toddler Tuesday

Posted  By: Kristi

What a great weekend. It was cold but beautiful outside which made searching for pumpkins even more fun. Carson and I went to the pumpkin patch with his sister MaLissa, her husband Josh and their two kiddos. It was the best pumpkin patch I have ever been to, I will tell you all about it later this week.

While we were at pumpkin patch we picked up a pumpkin each to carve and I also picked up one extra. Little Lou came over to play with me later in the day and I thought she might enjoy painting a pumpkin. We started out the day with me trying to teach my little sweetie how to use a fork while we ate Mac and Cheese. She got it down pretty good, little smarty! After lunch I put one of my old t-shirts on her so she wouldn't get her clothes all messy and brought out the paints. Since I was trying to teach Lou how to control the fork I thought that this would be a good time to use paint brushes, so she could continue learning how to control an object she was holding. She was happy about this, she didn't like getting her little hands dirty. = )

I love how she was so deep in concentration.

I think we might have a future artist in the family.

When we were done painting she helped me empty out my pumpkin so that I could carve it the next day. She liked watching me remove all the gooey insides but she didn't want to touch it...at all. She did however think it was pretty cool that the top of the pumpkin could be taken off and put back on. She kept checking it out.

She drew on the pumpkin for me a little too.

Afterwards we pretended like we were eating play fruit and called each other on fake phones. This girl is my little angel and any day that has her in it is one perfect day!

Until we have kids of our own I don't get to do too many toddler type activities. I am happy that I was able to be part of Toddler Tuesday, hopefully I will get to again soon!

Toddler Tuesday - Exercise and Stretching

Posted By:  Stephanie

If your toddler is like mine, they like to copy whatever you are doing/saying.  I work out at a gym with a great guy name Alex who is my personal trainer.  For those of you who live in the Oregon/Washington area he is in Vancouver, the owner of Fusion Athletics.  You should really check him out.  Anyway, she goes with me and likes to mock me when I jump rope and whatever else she can mock.  Her newest thing is acting like she's doing push ups at home and picking up some of my 1lb weights and walking around with them, so cute.  I also work out at home, or at least I have more often just lately so when I stretch she tries to do what I do.  I have now started having her come sit next to me and try to get her to follow along with the stretching part of my routine and she LOVES it.  My Girl loves to be right there with mommy at all times so getting to be apart of my workout routine is a major plus for her.

Here she is trying to do the butterfly stretch.  I love how she's holding her toes, what a doll.

Your turn, get up and do some jumping jacks with your little one.  Remember the post about having a dance party with your toddler?  This is the same idea, just a different level.  You don't have to do anything really intense, just have fun with it!  If you aren't the work out type of person, do some stretching.  Everyone could use a little stretching every once in a while. ; )

HAVE A GREAT DAY!

Toddler Tuesday - Potty Training

Posted By:  Stephanie

via

Potty training can be a tricky thing, or you may be one of those lucky parents that have kids that suddenly potty train themselves.  If you are one of those people I think you and your kid must be pretty cool, let's be friends?

My sister was telling me about a friend of hers who has a daughter who is 17 months.  At her daycare they have her sit on the potty every time they change her diaper.  When she decides she is done, which a lot of time is a few books later, they teach her the wiping, flushing and wash hands process and then put on a new diaper.  The goal in this is not that she is going to use the potty (although that is a nice perk), but to get her used to it and to associate what the potty is for.  After some time of this, now at 17 months, she is now telling her parents when she has to go potty and has actually used the potty a few times now.  AWESOME!

I'm home with My Girl so I decided that because she will be 16 months in 2 weeks I might as well try the same thing.  I did get a picture of her sitting on the pot waving but then the camera my dad got me for my birthday decided to have a malfunction and it wont let me upload the pictures!  The shutter isn't working either = ( .  Lucky me I'm still in the warranty period and get to exchange it for one that works.  Anyway, back to the potty talk.  My Girl is really liking sitting on the potty so it should be interesting to see if this works for us too.

Here are some tips that I found on the Dr Sears website on potty training before you start.

1. Toilet-training is a partnership, with proper roles assigned to each person. You can lead a baby to the bathroom, but you can't make him go.

2. You have not failed Parenting 101 if your baby is the last on the block to be dry. As with eating and sleeping, you can't and shouldn't force a baby to be dry or clean, but you can set the conditions that help baby train himself.

3. The bottom line is helping your baby achieve a healthy toilet- training attitude. Approach toilet-training as an exciting interaction rather than a dreaded task; consider this event an initiation into your role as instructor. From baby's viewpoint, toileting is his initiation into "bigness"-a rite of passage from toddlerhood into preschoolerhood. (This explains why the desire to stay little makes some procrastinators resist.)

4. Toilet-training is a complex skill. Before you rush baby to the potty at the first squat, consider what's involved in learning toileting skills. First, baby has to be aware of the pressure sensations of his bowel and bladder. Then he must make the connection between these sensations and what's happening inside his body. Next he learns to respond to these urges by running to the potty, where he must know how to remove his clothes, how to situate himself comfortably on this new kind of seat and how to hold his urges until all systems are go. With all these steps, it's no wonder many babies are still in diapers well into the third year.

5. The muscles surrounding the opening of the bladder and bowel (I call them doughnut muscles when explaining the elimination process to six-year- old bed wetters) need to be controlled to open and close at the proper time. Bowel training usually precedes bladder training, mainly because the doughnut muscles surrounding the bowel are not as impatient as those around the bladder. When a baby senses the urge to defecate, he has more time to respond before soiling his diapers. A solid substance is easier to control than liquid. When the bladder is full, the urge to go is sudden, strong, and hard to control.

6. The usual sequence of gaining bowel and bladder control is (1) nighttime bowel control; (2) daytime bowel control; (3) daytime bladder control; (4) nighttime bladder control.

7. Girls are rumored to be trained earlier than boys. This observation reflects more the sex of the trainer than the trainee. Culturally, toilet-training has been left to mothers; naturally, women feel more comfortable training girls, and baby girls are more likely to imitate their mommies. Picture mommy standing and trying to show baby Bert how to urinate. By imitation, babies learn that girls sit and boys stand, but in the beginning boys can sit, avoiding sprays and dribbles on walls and floor. When your son figures out he can stand just like daddy, he will.

8. The pressure is off parents to toilet train early. Don't equate toilet-training with good mothering. The idea that the earlier baby is eating three squares a day, weaned, toilet trained, and independent, the "better" the mother is nonsense.

9. We do not mean to imply that you lazily leave baby alone until he is old enough to order his own potty-chair. Some training is necessary on the parents' part, and some learning is needed by the baby. Children need parental guidance to get control of their bodies.

10. The temperament of the mother and baby play a role in readiness, too. A down-to-business baby tends to learn quickly and may even "train himself," especially if he has a mother who thinks the same way, but who is wise enough not to pressure. A laid-back baby with a casual mother may still be in diapers at three years and no one worries. With a laid-back baby and a down-to- business, mother toilet-training gets more challenging.

11. Take the pressure off you and baby. Don't cave in to in-law pressure. You know when your infant is ready. Of course, the "diaper-free" policy at your desired preschool looms over you like a due date.

12. Diaper company market research shows that toddlers are being toilet trained later than in the past, and to go along with this trend diaper companies are making bigger and better diapers. Children learn to use the toilet the same way they learn to walk and talk: by imitating their caregivers- and when the appropriate nerves and muscles are mature enough to be coordinated. For these reasons, the time of training will vary from home to home and child to child.

13. Toilet-training is so difficult for parents and a battle for toddlers because:
  1. The infant was encouraged to use the diaper as a toilet, so the toddler has to unlearn what he has previously been taught.
  2. The child has not yet developed body language to make the connection between feeling and going, since prior to toilet-training, parents were not looking for these cues and the baby did not give them.
  3. Toddlers, especially boys, are on the go and the last thing they want to do is "sit still" on the potty.

This talk about potty training reminds me of the cover of one of my all time favorite books.  As a matter in fact, this reminds me even more that I really need to purchase it so that I can read it with My Girl.

If you haven't read this book, it is an ABSOLUTE must read.  It makes me tear up every time!

What are some good tips and tricks you have for potty training?  Please share for those of us who are going to, or just starting the process.

Taking "What's in the Drawer?" to a New Level

Posted By:  Stephanie

This past Toddler Tuesday I told you about an activity we call What's in the Drawer?

In the past My Girl has been somewhat tame about this activity, sticking to only one drawer.  Not anymore!  She has taken this to a new level!  She sure does make me laugh, that's for sure!

Please ignore the fact that she is once again in jammies.  I don't know why but I seem to get a lot of pictures before she's dressed for the day.

If we were going to have a boy we were going to name him Cole, so when she wears these jammies we call her Cole because she looks like a boy while wearing them.

Needless to say, I have been running around the house picking up after this girl like crazy while she has been in her new exploring stage.

Toddler Tuesday - What's in the Drawer?

“Curiosity is the backbone of a child’s development of competence.  From your baby’s earliest perceptions onward, he will want to feel and explore everything and experience the world through all of his senses.” – Jackie Silberg

This is an older picture of My Girl from May, 2011.  Although she is a bit older now NOTHING has changed.  Every time I'm in the kitchen she goes to her drawer that I have placed Tupperware items that she can not hurt herself on (no sharp edges) for her to play with.  As she has gotten older the way she plays with these items is different.  She went from pulling everything out and just being amazed with the drawer and the things in it to making noises by hitting them together and now she is exploring the options of fitting different size containers together.  If you have a child that needs a lot of change you can rotate what items are in the drawer.

If you don't already have a drawer or cabinet for you child to play in while you are working in the kitchen you are missing out.  They love it AND it really keeps your little one busy while you get things done.

What does your toddler like to play with in the kitchen?

Toddler Tuesday - Obstacle Course

Posted By:  Stephanie

Obstacle courses are fun for adults, dogs and older kids, why wouldn't toddlers like them too?  Guess what...THEY DO!

Use whatever you have around the house.  You can use a large pillow to climb over, a box to crawl through, a chair or stool to circle around and finish with a run through a door or to something soft like a couch.  You can add even more fun to the obstacle course by starting by blowing a whistle in the beginning and having a crepe paper finish at the end in a doorway.

Have fun with this and get creative!

Toddler Tuesday - Dance Party!

Posted By:  Stephanie

I have always been amazed at the baby/toddler/child instinct to dance or at least bounce with the beat of music.  I remember being pregnant with My Girl and I would put music on my laptop and put it near my stomach.  It wouldn't be but a minute later before she was jiggling around and rolling like crazy, she loved to dance even before she was born.  Since then nothing has changed so we have DANCE PARTIES!

Our dance parties only consist of her and I, but we turn on the music and we just dance!  It is so much fun and keeps her occupied and it is great exercise for me as well.  I suggest if you haven't already done this with your little on that you pull our the tunes and dance the day away.  This is a great way to get energy out an hour or so before nap time.  My Girl isn't walking on her own yet at 15 months but she likes to stand and hold onto the couch and dance, or even better I hold her and dance around the room.  She loves it, it's great bonding time when we can laugh together and be goofy (which we like to do often) and again, great child activity and it is a great way for us to get up and move.

My Girl and I had a busy day yesterday, we were away from the house all day and we got home after bedtime.  Will made mac and cheese for himself last night for dinner before we got home and when I went to get her some milk out of the fridge I found this container with the note on it.  So cute, he knows that she loves mac and cheese so he saved her some and wrote her a note.  What a good/cute daddy he is!

Alright, enough reading for now (until we post again of course) it's time to get up and have a dance party with your little ones!
